Jane
Christy, Community Outreach Coordinator elected Freeholder
The voters
of Cumberland County returned control of the freeholder board to the Democrats
Tuesday, November 5, after a one year lapse, electing Jane
Christy and Bruce Peterson. Jeff Trout was the lone Republican incumbent
re-elected. The board will be 5-2, Democrat controlled on January 2, when
the new elected Freeholders will be sworn into office.
Christy, the top vote getter, and Peterson, defeated incumbent Republicans
James Sauro and Douglas Sorantino. The unofficial results show Christy
with 15,404, Peterson with 15,009 and Trout with 14,437 votes.
When told that she was winning at the Ramada Hotel Tuesday evening, Christy
said, "I have to see it in black and white first," before referring
to her father, Jim Yetman, former county freeholder and Bridgeton mayor
who died in 1983. "Even though he's not here, he'd be very happy."
Christy, who is married to Matt Christy, has lived in Millville for the
past 36 years, and has been active for many years in her city. "It
is overwhelming for me to see the Millville turn-out in this election.
I knew the numbers were going to be huge by the amount of people who had
voted in my precinct. I have done a lot of work in Millville and I
wanted to bring that same focus to the county. It's wonderful that so
many people in my home town supported me," she said. In Millville,
Christy received 3,121 unofficial votes with Trout coming in second with
2,967. Trout is also from Millville.
Jane and Matt Christy own the Christy Funeral Home, located at 11 W. Broad
St. in Millville.
